Community groups are how we at Redemption Church live out that aspect of the Christian life. Community groups meet weekly at people’s homes and last anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 hours. We eat together, pray together, and study the word together.
When many people think of church, they think of a large amount of people gathering together worshipping God. And, although worshipping God with a large group is an important part of the Christian life, it’s not meant to be all of the Christian life. We’ve also been designed by God for community with other people to share life’s hurts, to help one another grow in their walk with Christ, and to serve God together.
First Century Church Community
When the book of Acts talks about the First Century church, here is how Luke records what the church is like:
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

The church is eating together, praying together, studying the Word together, and selling possessions just to take care of one another’s needs. Believers spend time together and share life together. That can only happen in the context of a smaller group.
